El peso de la paja

A cualquier persona le preguntaron alguna vez "¿qué pesa más: un kilo de plomo o un kilo de paja?". Dependiendo de nuestra avidez responderemos o bien que plomo o bien que pesan igual (¿alguien respondería paja alguna vez?).

Y si ahora preguntamos "si lanzamos desde la misma altura un kilo de plomo y un kilo de paja, suponiendo que no hay viento, ¿qué llega antes al suelo?". La respuesta está clara: el plomo.

La causa de todo esto es que un kilo de paja abulta mucho más que un kilo de plomo, por lo tanto no cae tan rápido, no debido al rozamiento con el aire, que es despreciable, sino debido al Principio de Arquímedes, ése mismo que nos tuvimos que aprender de memoria y que venía a decir algo así como "Todo cuerpo sumergido en un fluído sufre una fuerza vertical ascendente llamada empuje que es equivalente al peso del volumen del líquido desalojado". (Cuando yo me lo tuve que aprender para el examen de ciencias naturais no tenía ni idea de lo que significaba nada de eso ni para qué servía, y lo llamaban educar).

Y es que ya lo dijo Torricelli allá en la primera mitad del siglo XVII: vivimos en el fondo de un mar de aire.

Y si definimos el peso de un objeto no por cómo lo atrae la gravedad, sino por la fuerza neta que se ejerce sobre él... ¿qué pesa más: un kilo de plomo o un kilo de paja?

Jo! Me siento como cuando estaba en el cole y tenía un examen de esos sorpresa...
A ver, según tu explicación deberíamos medir el peso del aire desalojado por cada uno de los volúmenes desalojados por la paja y el plomo respectivamente, como el volúmen de la paja es mayor, más cantidad de aire desalojada, ergo más peso = mayor empuje hacia arriba.
Entonces, tenemos en el kilo de plomo una flechita hacia abajo: P1, de valor igual a la flechita P2 sobre el kilo de paja. Y luego, también en el plomo, una flechita hacia arriba (digamos FV1) de valor inferior a la flechita correspondiente (FV2) a la de la paja.
Para el plomo, P1 - FV1 =/< P2 - FV2.
Luego, pesa más el plomo (a no ser claro, que tengamos una bala de paja con la idem tan pero tan prensada, que ocupe el mismo volúmen que el trozo de plomo).
¿He aprobado???

Eledhwen: muy bien, "pesa" más el plomo, dudo que exista una bala de paja que ocupe lo mismo que ocupa una masa idéntica de plomo... sería interesante imaginarse a una vaca intentándose comer eso.

"¡Que pesada se me hace hoy la comida!" se me ocurre que podría decir, si es que a las vacas les agradan estos juegos de palabras :D

Esta es mi esxplicación según el principio de Arquímedes: Suponiendo que el volumen de la alpaca de paja es mucho mayor que el volumen de plomo (que va a ser que sí:-)), el volumen desalojado por la alpaca es mucho mayor que el del plomo, y por lo tanto, el empuje vertical ascedente es también mayor, y por consiguiente, más pesado que el peso del volumen desalojado por el plomo. Al ser este empuje major, la alpaca cae mucho más despacio (desde una altura considerable) que el plomo. Eso si, tengamos en cuenta, que el peso neto de ambos siempre será el mismo a igualdad de masa, ya que la única fuerza (si suponemos el vacío) es la gravedad, y sabemos que peso(p)=masa(m) x aceleración(a).

Vamos a ver escritor, que seguro que eres un niño por la forma que tienes de escribir: un kilo de paja y un kilo de plomo caen exactamente al mismo tiempo al suelo, si esque has leído algo de Galileo, o bien has sido capaz de desentrañarlo por ti mismo (que es obvio que no). La explicación esque la fuerza de la gravedad atrae exactamente a los dos cuerpos con la misma fuerza, dependientemente de la masa. De hecho Einstein también demostró que el cuero al caer no siente su masa, precisamente porque no es un valor a tener en cuenta.
Quizás no te hubiera escrito este comentario si no hubieras dicho lo de "prescindiendo del aire" o algo así, porque más precisamente, lo que haría que tu comentario tuviese relación don la realidad, sería en esta misma y exclusiva condición, ya que la fricción de la paja con el aire es mayor que la del plomo por simple forma y volumen.
Veo que haces muchos alardes de intelectualidad, porque seguramente seas un niño que se lo cree. Está bien que le des importancia a eso, pero en este caso te salió mal. En vez de citar a Torricelli, cita a Maestre Galielo.
Y por cierto lo de Arquímedes no tiene absolutamente nada que ver con este problema.

Galileo, te has equivocado y mucho. Primero para no ser muy tecnico dire que teniendo en cuenta las leyes de la mecanica clasica (despreciaremos los efectos relativistas que no vienen al clásico), la acelaración (que es una forma indirectade medir el peso=masa * aceleracion) a la que esta sometidos ambos kilos es la misma, pero esta se ve afectada por dos factores que conviven a la vez (ambos son objeto de estudios de la mecanica de fluidos), el principio de arquimedes (que es el resultado de la diferencia de presiones ejercida por el aire en las diferentes caras de la alpaca o del bloque de plomo) y el rozamiento con el propio fluido. En ambos casos esta valor es mayor para la alpaca de paja que para el bloque de plomo, (a bote pronto asumo que el segundo efecto es mayor, pero deberia echar numeros para comprobarlo) y por eso la acelaracion real sera menor, y por tanto su "peso aparente" (entiendase esto como la resultante de las fuerzas a la que esta sometida) es menor.
